Jobs in this family are responsible for the oversight, facilitation, and/or promotion of programs and services affecting agricultural or agribusiness industries in the state.

Typical functions

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following: 

  • Obtain, inspect, and test agricultural samples.
  • Perform inspections of grain storage areas and transportation conveyances.
  • Examine grain and other agricultural businesses’ licenses and records.
  • Conduct inventories and assessments of grain, livestock, and other agricultural products. 

Positions allocated to this series may perform the duties described, or specialize in areas such as animal health, plant industries, weights and measures, grain inspection and warehousing, and/or market development or promotion. The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from testing samples to directing agricultural services and programs.

Agricultural Inspector

This is a first-level vocational position responsible for obtaining samples and inspecting grain or other agricultural products. Other duties may include the inspection of grain storage areas and transportation conveyances for proper operation and sanitary conditions.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

Knowledge of grain sampling techniques. Ability to operate sampling and grain testing devices. Ability to climb ladders and work on top of and inside equipment. Ability to work in adverse environment and weather conditions. Ability to operate a motor vehicle and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license. Ability to work on-call and with varied work schedules.

Typical qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent.

Senior Agricultural Inspector

This is a second-level vocational position responsible for obtaining samples and inspecting and testing grain or other agricultural products, including the preparation, grading, and testing of agricultural samples. Other duties may include the inspection of grain storage areas and transportation conveyances for proper operation and sanitary conditions. Serving as a field team lead may also be required.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous level: Ability to operate laboratory equipment.

Typical qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent and 1-2 years of experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)

Agricultural Market Specialist

This is a first-level professional position responsible for performing detailed examinations of grain and/or other agricultural businesses’ licenses and related records. This position conducts physical inventories/assessments of grain, livestock, and other agricultural products to determine the type, quantity, quality and condition of the commodities. Duties may include market development or promotion and facilitation of programs. May also compile and provide agricultural market reports. May be responsible for training staff.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Knowledge of state and federal laws, policies, rules, and regulations relating to grain sampling and inspection. Knowledge of accounting and auditing principles. Ability to train and mentor lower-level employees.

Senior Agricultural Market Specialist

This is a senior professional position responsible for performing regulatory, promotional, or assistive services affecting agricultural or agribusiness industries in the state. Duties may be in areas such as animal health, plant industries, weights and measures, grain inspection and warehousing, and/or market development or promotion. Duties at this level may include market development or promotion, facilitation of programs, or grants management. May also serve as a lead worker or supervise lower-level positions.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Ability to train, assign, and oversee lower-level employees.

Typical qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 1-2 years of experience in agricultural programs. (Substitutions may be allowed.)

Agribusiness Supervisor

This is a supervisory position responsible for assisting in the planning, direction, and coordination of regulatory, promotional, or assistive services and programs affecting agricultural or agribusiness industries in the state. Duties may be in areas such as animal health, plant industries, weights and measures, grain inspection and warehousing, and/or market development or promotion. Employees at this level are also responsible for budget and grants management. Employee supervision includes hire decisions, training oversight, performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Ability to supervise, plan, and evaluate lower-level employees.

Typical qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 2 or more years of experience in agricultural programs. (Substitutions may be allowed.)

Agribusiness Manager

This is a supervisory/managerial position responsible for directing or assisting in the overall planning, direction, and coordination of regulatory, promotional, or assistive services; and programs affecting agricultural or agribusiness industries in the state. Positions at this level are also responsible for budget and grants management. Duties may be in areas such as animal health, plant industries, weights and measures, grain inspection and warehousing, and/or market development or promotion. Employee supervision includes hire decisions, training oversight, performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline.

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Knowledge of the agricultural industry. Ability to direct and coordinate assigned agricultural services and programs.
