Jobs in this family are responsible for the coordination and implementation of inspection and enforcement activities concerning consumer safety, compliance, and protections.

Typical functions

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following: 

  • Enforce federal and state laws for various agriculture programs such as animal health, plant industries, weights and measures, meat inspection, and milk and dairy.
  • Perform inspections and investigations for various agriculture programs. 

Positions allocated to this series may perform the duties described, or specialize in various agricultural areas. The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from performing inspections in the field to coordinating program activities.

Consumer Protections Technician

This is a vocational position involving the enforcement of federal and state laws relevant to consumer safety and protections for an assigned area through the inspection of alleged violations. Work performed will help protect consumers and producers of food, feed, fuel, seed, animals, fiber, and plant material. May also participate in investigations.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

Knowledge of federal and state laws pertaining to consumer safety and protections. Knowledge of testing methods and devices. Ability to operate and maintain instruments and equipment relating to assigned area. Ability to analyze data and prepare reports. Working in inclement weather and hazardous

environments may be required. Ability to operate a motor vehicle and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license.

Typical qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent.

Consumer Protections Specialist

This is a professional position responsible for the enforcement of state and federal laws in programs such as animal health, plant industries, meat inspection, and weights and measures. Work involves participating in inspections and investigations of alleged violations of statutes and regulations. May compile and provide agricultural market reports. Employees at this level may also provide training and/or technical assistance to program staff.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous level: Knowledge of regulations, practices, and standards for assigned programs. Ability to enforce program specific statues and regulations. Ability to perform time sensitive and routine inspections.

Senior Consumer Protections Specialist

This is an advanced professional position responsible for the enforcement of state and federal laws in programs such as animal health, plant industries, meat inspection, and weights and measures. Work involves conducting a full range of investigations of alleged violations of statutes and regulations relevant to consumer safety, protections, and compliance. May issue citations and implement enforcement activities. May also provide training, technical assistance, and/or supervision to program staff.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Ability to train, supervise, plan, and evaluate the work of employees.

Bachelor’s degree and 2-4 years of relevant experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)

Consumer Protections Coordinator

This position is responsible for the coordination and implementation of the inspection and enforcement activities of a consumer safety and protections program. Work involves overseeing investigations of alleged violations of statutes and regulations. Employees in these positions typically supervise, which includes providing training, technical assistance, and functional supervision to program staff involved in conducting field inspections, investigations, and/or animal testing.

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Ability to plan and coordinate a comprehensive consumer safety and protection program.
