Typical functions

The functions within this job family include the following:

  • Provide hair care services to include shampooing, conditioning, cutting, coloring, styling, and performing various chemical and therapeutic hair and scalp treatments.
  • Shave or trim facial hair.

Barber/Cosmetologist

This is a licensed position responsible for providing grooming and cosmetic services within a state facility.  Other responsibilities include ensuring cleanliness and organization of work area, maintenance and sterilization of tools and equipment, and maintenance of appropriate inventory levels.    

Knowledge, skills & abilities

Knowledge of proper selection and application of hair and scalp care products; as well as potential safety hazards and appropriate precautions involved in hair styling activities.  Ability to provide services to clients with mental illness and/or developmental or physical disabilities, and to stand for long periods of time.

Typical qualifications

Licensure to practice as a Barber or in the field of cosmetology.
