Jobs in this family assess, diagnose, treat, and help prevent physical and mental diseases and injuries.

Typical functions

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Perform assessment, diagnosis, evaluation, and determination of patient treatment plans and processes.
  • Perform medical procedures and the delivery of patient care that requires a physician.
  • Complete discharge planning, taking into consideration patient environment and skills.
  • Complete required documentation according to medical policies, practices, and protocols.

The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from receiving training as a resident physician to serving as medical director of a facility or performing consultative duties.

Resident Physician

This an entry-level position that receives training from a more experienced Physician and provides professional medical care of assigned patients and may practice in one or a combination of medical fields including primary care, acute care, internal medicine, geriatrics, and forensics. 

Knowledge, skills & abilities

Knowledge of the principles and practices of general medicine and the methods and procedures utilized in diagnosing and treating a variety of diseases.  Ability to apply the principles and practices of medical science.

Typical qualifications

Temporary or active licensure and enrollment in a residency-training program through an accredited university.

Physician

This is a licensed position that performs professional medical care of assigned patients and may specialize in one or a combination of medical fields including primary care, acute care, internal medicine, geriatrics, and/or forensics.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous level: Knowledge of the principles and practices of general and/or specialized medicine, and methods and processes utilized in diagnosing and treating a variety of diseases.  Ability to analyze and evaluate the practices, techniques, and treatment procedures employed in a particular medical specialty for effectiveness.

Typical qualifications

Licensure and completion of residency.

Chief Physician

This is a licensed professional position which may function as the clinical director of a state facility, direct a statewide medical review program for physicians licensed by the State Board, and/or offer consultation on medical policies for a state agency.  The position may serve as medical policy director and/or perform peer reviews for compliance and standard of care.  In addition, incumbents at this level are accountable for mentoring other physicians and may act as the medical director for a designated facility.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels:  Knowledge of agency mission and procedures, and principles and practices of medical supervision.  Ability to supervise, plan, and coordinate the activities of health care professionals. 

Typical qualifications

Licensure as a Physician and 5 or more years of post-residency experience.
