Jobs in this family provide licensed professional counseling work including client counseling, assessment, and therapeutic applications.

Typical functions

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Interview clients and administer standardized assessment instruments.
  • Interpret tests and interview results to aid in admission, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and/or discharge planning functions.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to formulate client treatment plans, discuss client progress, and determine possible changes in treatment strategies.
  • Provide individual, family, or group counseling.

Counselor-in-Training

This is a trainee-level professional position responsible for counseling work of a therapeutic nature performed under the direct supervision and instruction of a Licensed Professional Counselor, psychologist, or psychiatrist.  Employees at this level perform a variety of professionally supervised tasks including assessment, admission, client counseling, prognosis, placement, treatment, and/or discharge planning functions.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

Knowledge of the  biological, cognitive-affective, and social bases of behavior; counseling theories and techniques; and the scientific methods and procedures of understanding, predicting, and influencing human behavior such as statistics, experimental design, and psychometrics.  Ability to assist in conducting individual or group interventions; and administer, score, and offer preliminary interpretations of test results.

Typical qualifications

Possession of a provisional license as a Counselor-in-Training.

Licensed Professional Counselor

This is a licensed professional counseling position responsible for developing, implementing, and coordinating counseling and related therapeutic services in an assigned treatment or habilitation program.  Employees at this level formulate and present treatment plan recommendations for review during interdisciplinary treatment team meetings, and may function as a team leader/coordinator.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous level:  Knowledge of psychodiagnostic and psychotherapeutic theories and techniques; and personality theory, human development, and abnormal psychology.  Ability to administer, score, and interpret complex test results.

Typical qualifications

Licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor.
