Jobs in this family diagnose and treat mental disorders, learning disabilities, and cognitive, behavioral, and emotional problems using individual, group, and family therapies, and psychological treatments.

Typical functions

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Provide psychological service functions involving diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and admission-discharge planning.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings to develop treatment plans, discuss client progress, and recommend possible changes in treatment strategy.
  • Prepare progress notes, psychological summaries, and other reports as required.

The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from associate-level psychology work to professional licensed administrative/managerial work.

Associate Psychologist

This is a professional position accountable for coordinating and managing the assessment and treatment of mental illnesses.  Provides thorough behavioral health services including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.  Develops and implements individual treatment plans that specify type, frequency, intensity, and duration of therapy. Treats and counsels clients and uses a variety of treatment methods to intervene and assist in behavior modification. Writes reports on clients and evaluates the effectiveness of counseling or other treatments, and modifies plans and diagnoses as necessary.  May conduct court-ordered evaluations and provide testimony in court proceedings.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

Knowledge of psychodiagnostic and psychotherapeutic theories and techniques.  Ability to administer and interpret complex psychological examinations.

Typical qualifications

Master’s degree and status as grandfathered Associate Psychologist with the State of Missouri.

Psychologist

This is a licensed professional position accountable for coordinating and managing the assessment and treatment of mental illnesses.  Provides thorough behavioral health services including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.  Develops and implements individual treatment plans that specify type, frequency, intensity, and duration of therapy.  Treats and counsels clients and uses a variety of treatment methods to intervene and assist in behavior modification.  Writes reports on clients, and evaluates the effectiveness of counseling or other treatments and modifies plans and diagnoses as necessary.  May conduct court-ordered evaluations and provide testimony in court proceedings. 

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous level:  Knowledge of psychological assessment and measurement techniques.  Ability to develop, implement, and coordinate psychological services for an assigned treatment/habilitation program.

Typical qualifications

Licensure as a Psychologist. (If not licensed at time of hire, must attain license within 18 months.)

Senior Psychologist

This is a seasoned licensed professional position accountable for coordinating and managing the assessment and treatment of mental illnesses.  May supervise other Psychologists and/or function as a Certified Forensic Examiner.  Provides thorough behavioral health services including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.  Develops and implements individual treatment plans that specify type, frequency, intensity, and duration of therapy.  Treats and counsels clients and uses a variety of treatment methods to intervene and assist in behavior modification.  Writes reports on clients and evaluates the effectiveness of counseling or other treatments, and modifies plans and diagnoses as necessary. May conduct court-ordered evaluations and provide testimony in court proceedings.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Knowledge of individual differences, such as personality theory, human development, and abnormal psychology. Knowledge of departmental protocols and legal requirements in assessing and treating forensic patients.  Ability to conduct individual and group interventions.

Typical qualifications

Licensure and 3-5 years of experience as a Psychologist.  May also possess a post-doctoral specialty such as: neuropsychology, forensic psychology, or geriatric psychology.

Director of Psychology

This is a licensed managerial position, which is accountable for coordinating and managing, through subordinate staff, the assessment and treatment of mental illnesses.  Provides thorough behavioral health services including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.  Develops and implements individual treatment plans that specify type, frequency, intensity, and duration of therapy.  Treats and counsels clients and uses a variety of treatment methods to intervene and assist in behavior modification.  Writes reports on clients and evaluates the effectiveness of counseling or other treatments, and modifies plans and diagnoses as necessary.  May conduct court-ordered evaluations and provide testimony in court proceedings.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Knowledge of the scientific methods and procedures of understanding, predicting, and influencing human behavior, such as statistics, experimental design, and psychometrics.  Ability to coordinate the activities in a psychological treatment program, and to supervise psychologists and other staff.

Typical qualifications

Licensure and 5 or more years of experience as a Psychologist.
