Description

Jobs in this family perform fire suppression and rescue and emergency medical treatment activities for the State.

Typical functions

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Respond to fire alarm, aircraft emergency, and emergency medical service (EMS) incidents.
  • Select proper breathing apparatus and fire extinguishing equipment.
  • Administer emergency first aid and/or cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • Participate in fire drills, staged rescue operations, and live fire training.

The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from providing emergency/fire rescue and medical treatment services to planning and administrative functions of a military airfield fire department.

Firefighter

This is a first-level firefighting position that serves as a member of a team or crew to suppress fires, administer emergency medical assistance (at a first level of aid), respond to hazardous materials incidents, and assist with aircraft/vehicle accidents and other emergency situations. At this level, employees follow written policies and procedures, and specific instruction of team leaders. A key focus at this level is training: participating in drills, demonstrations, and classroom and practical training on rescue techniques, hazardous material response, first aid, fire prevention, fire safety inspections, and the use of various suppressants, tools, and equipment.   

Knowledge, skills & abilities

Knowledge of modern fire prevention, suppression, and rescue methods and equipment. Knowledge of the structural features/design of all aircraft that are housed or used at the assigned airfield, as well as construction materials and basic structural layout of all airfield buildings. Ability to perform the physical demands of the position including heavy lifting, climbing, and maneuvering. Ability to work in conditions involving extremely high temperatures, toxic fumes, smoke, etc. Ability to administer emergency first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Typical qualifications

Completion of a certification program in firefighting.

Firefighter Crew Chief

This is a second-level firefighting position accountable for serving as a crew chief assigned to operate a specific firefighting apparatus at the scene of aircraft, vehicle, and structural fires. At this level, employees assign vehicles and equipment to the most advantageous position and direct forcible entry into a structure or aircraft.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous level: Knowledge of procedures for properly and safely operating various types of firefighting equipment and apparatuses. Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices. Skill in directing the operation of specialized vehicles and equipment. Skill in fighting various types of fires. Ability to organize and direct fire protection and firefighting operations. 

Typical qualifications

3 years of firefighting experience.

Assistant Fire Chief

This is a supervisory position accountable for the direction of fire, rescue, and medical treatment services at an assigned location. Work involves planning and directing the operations of multiple firefighting crews assigned to a shift. Employee supervision includes hire recommendations, training, planning and assigning work, performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Additional duties include coordinating the response to fire alarms and emergency medical service (EMS), incidents to contain or extinguish fire, and emergency medical activities.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Knowledge of training techniques. Ability to direct personnel and firefighters in preventing and/or extinguishing fires and preventing accidents.

Typical qualifications

5 or more years of firefighting experience and 2 or more years of supervising a firefighting crew.

Deputy Fire Chief

This is a managerial firefighting position accountable for directing fire, rescue, and medical treatment services operations. Work involves planning and directing the operations of multiple shifts of firefighting crews at an assigned location. At this level, an employee will assist the Fire Chief with the fire department’s planning and administrative functions. Additional duties include directing the response to fire alarms and emergency medical service (EMS), incidents to contain or extinguish fires, and emergency medical activities; serves as incident commander.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Knowledge of policies and procedures related to the fire department’s support activities including budget, procurement, and personnel.

Typical qualifications

7 or more years of firefighting experience and 2 or more years of supervising multiple firefighting crews.
