Jobs in this family are peace officers who provide security services at a National Guard base.

Typical functions

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Provide armed security and protection.
  • Maintain various guard posts.
  • Detain persons suspected of law violations.
  • Investigate on-site incidents/accidents.
  • Enforce traffic control laws.

The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from armed security and law enforcement work to supervisory and administrative work at an assigned Missouri National Guard base.

Military Security Officer

First-level security work protecting aircraft, equipment, persons, base buildings and grounds, and military resources located at the assigned base, against loss or damage from theft, fire, vandalism, or other causes. Maintains order and proper behavior of individuals and groups for a National Guard base. Works under direct supervision and governed by detailed procedures and practices.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

Knowledge of security procedures, policies, rules, and regulations established for the assigned base. Knowledge of applicable military regulations, policies, and directives. Knowledge of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidelines regarding base flightline security. Ability to display proficiency in firearms usage. Ability to operate a motor vehicle and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license.

Typical qualifications

Completion of a training program from a certified law enforcement training academy and eligibility to be commissioned as a peace officer.

Advanced Military Security Officer

Second-level security work protecting aircraft, equipment, persons, base buildings and grounds, and military resources located at the assigned base, against loss or damage from theft, fire, vandalism, or other causes, and maintaining order and proper behavior of individuals and groups for a National Guard base. Employees at this level apply knowledge and experience to analyze situations and provide appropriate response.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous level: Knowledge of base security measures, including planning, implementation, and control. Ability to quickly assess information to take corrective action in emergency situations.

2-3 years of relevant experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)

Military Security Supervisor

Supervisory role accountable for overseeing a security program assigned responsibility for protecting aircraft, equipment, persons, base buildings and grounds, and military resources located at the assigned base, against loss or damage from theft, fire, vandalism, or other causes, and maintaining order and proper behavior of individuals and groups for a National Guard base.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Knowledge of the rules, regulations, and policies established for the purpose of ensuring adequate security staffing for base activities, building, equipment, and grounds. Knowledge of law enforcement techniques used to handle various persons and groups. Ability to present training and instructional information to lower-level staff. Ability to develop clear and concise reports.

4 or more years of relevant experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)

Military Security Manager

Managerial position accountable for supervisory and administrative work providing for armed security and law enforcement at an assigned Missouri National Guard base within the jurisdiction of the Office of the Adjutant General. Supervises units of military security officers providing armed security and protection to aircraft, equipment, persons, and military resources located at the assigned base, including base building and grounds. Oversees, reviews, and approves work schedules and makes changes in work assignments.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Knowledge of principles and techniques of effective supervision, training, and administrative principles and practices relating to law enforcement.  Ability to plan, promote, and maintain a complex security program and direct the work of others in carrying out assigned military security force functions.

Typical qualifications

5 or more years of relevant experience and 1-2 years of supervisory experience.  (Substitutions may be allowed.)
