Addiction Counselor

General summary

This is a professional position responsible for providing individual and group counseling, therapeutic intervention, and educational classes to clients and family members.  In addition, assistance is given to clients and family members in recognizing problems and factors that lead to substance use disorders and helping them develop healthy and alternative coping behaviors.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

Knowledge of human behavior, attitudes, and motivations and their applicability in the treatment and/or rehabilitation of individuals with substance use disorders; substance use disorders and their effects on the individual and family members; and resources available to individuals with substance use disorders.  Ability to recognize symptoms of substance use disorders and elicit information concerning underlying reasons for addiction.

Typical qualifications

Bachelor’s degree. (Substitutions may be allowed.)
