General summary

Positions at this level are accountable for coordinating and managing, through subordinate staff, the assessment and treatment of mental illnesses.  Provides complete psychiatric services including assessment, diagnosis, medical prescription, and treatment.  Responsible for more elaborate, complex, and precise evaluation and care to severely mentally and/or emotionally ill adults, adolescents, and/or children.  Prescribes, evaluates, and monitors administration of medications.  Leads interdisciplinary teams in evaluating new patients and writes admission and discharge orders.  Serves as a consultant to other medical staff, prepares/submits evaluation reports to the courts, and testifies in court proceedings. 

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous level:  Knowledge of the organization and operation of a mental health facility or clinic; and of employee policies and procedures.  Ability to supervise professional and non-professional medical, nursing, and technical support staff in the delivery of medical care.

Typical qualifications

Licensure as a Psychiatrist, Board Certification in Psychiatry, and 5 or more years of experience as a Psychiatrist.
