Systems Administration Specialist

General summary

This is a second-level position accountable for applying and using experience in the field of systems administration and multi-platform hardware and software operating systems to provide a full range of system administration functions within the assigned organizational area and information technology (IT) function. Configures, tests, installs, and monitors performance of typically multi-platform hardware and software. Updates and maintains documentation on the assigned servers. Performs backups and recoveries as required on assigned servers. Makes recommendations for changes, and may implement agreed enhancements. May provide technical leadership to first-level staff. Acts with independence and may be accountable for significant portion of a large project/enhancement.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous level: Knowledge of multiple platforms. Knowledge of staff mentoring and coaching techniques and methods. Skill in evaluating network performance. Ability to think critically and provide recommended solutions to issues. Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments.

Typical qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 2-4 years of IT experience with emphasis in system administration and operating systems. (Substitutions may be allowed.)
