General summary

Positions at this level supervise/manage a museum facility or division of a museum. Employees are accountable for conducting research activities, developing and documenting a collection, and overseeing planning projects in an area of specialization. Employees are responsible for long-range planning and program development for overall collection and exhibition development, management, interpretation, and documentation in area of specialization. Employee supervision includes hire recommendations, training, planning and assigning work, performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires these employees to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen.  

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Ability to manage the care and conservation of art works and artifacts. Ability to manage the development and maintenance of history and natural history exhibits. Ability to lead, mentor, coach, and develop skills of staff. 

Typical qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 4-6 years of relevant experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)
