General summary

Laboratory position accountable for managing the overall planning, development, coordination, and administration of laboratory services. Directs or assists administrative personnel in policy development, program planning, and coordination; assists in directing the development and implementation of departmental planning issues. Employee supervision includes hire recommendations, training, planning and assigning work, performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires the employees to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen with responsibility for data generated.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels:  Knowledge of medical, veterinary, forensic, environmental, and/or scientific principles and laboratory practices involved in providing a laboratory service. Ability to analyze and evaluate policies and operations, and formulate recommendations.

Typical qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 4 or more years of relevant experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)
