General summary

This is a second-level firefighting position accountable for serving as a crew chief assigned to operate a specific firefighting apparatus at the scene of aircraft, vehicle, and structural fires. At this level, employees assign vehicles and equipment to the most advantageous position and direct forcible entry into a structure or aircraft.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous level: Knowledge of procedures for properly and safely operating various types of firefighting equipment and apparatuses. Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices. Skill in directing the operation of specialized vehicles and equipment. Skill in fighting various types of fires. Ability to organize and direct fire protection and firefighting operations. 

Typical qualifications

3 years of firefighting experience.
